Greetings, giving opera another try. I am having trouble finding an opera add-on that works as well (and as easy to use) as adblock does in firefox.

I have been trying this but i cant seem to get it to work despite following the instructions to the letter. Maybe its xp64bit or maybe it is opera 9 being a release candidate or maybe it is me, i dont know. But anyone know of any good ones for opera that blocks flash/gif/.jpg adds like adblock does in firefox?

thanks.

I used Proximitron before switching back to FF w/ adblock. Very very good at blocking unwanted ads/flash etc .etc.

So far, after reading Mem's link above, both AdMuncher and Proximitron seem to do a very good job of blocking ads using Opera. Admunch isn't free, though, but it works with any browser. Proximitron isn't hard to setup, but it does require you to set your browser up using a localhost proxy.

I'm gonna use Proximitron for a few days and see how it goes. I might decide to go with Admuncher, though.

Oh, AdMuncher isn't free? Dammit, that f**king sucks. Excuse my French. LOL, I had just emailed them an hour ago and told them how much I love it and thanks for keeping it free. Boy do I feel stupid...

Seemed way too good to be free. :Q Oh well, back to the drawing board... :( Maybe I'll take a jab at making a proxy program to do it.

Yep, after tinkering with it for a little while, I really like Admuncher. Although, Proxomitron is a excellent and free proxy program that does a great job.....definately give it a try.

Proxomitron and the others that are not built into the browser will probably have trouble in xp64:( I would prefer something that does not sit in the tray and is basically an addon to the browser like adblock is for firefox.

They should work with x64 just fine. As you commonly mention, Alcohol or Daemon Tools does not work with x64, but that's because they use 32-bit drivers. AdMuncher is not a driver. It is not a Winsock LSP either, just a proxy.

Let me see what I can make. Making a proxy isn't hard at all fortunately. :) It's just adding the rules and everything (you could copy AdMuncher's rules). All you gotta do is intercept the data, modify it to your liking, and send it on its way.

There is no reason it should be any slower. That means its sending out a wrong buffer size or something. I'll compare my proxy to no proxy with Ethereal and make sure it's speedy. I hate slowdowns. A Winsock LSP (same thing firewalls use to monitor and block data) looked promising for a second because it would work on all things that receive the web page, however it is very difficult to code for (thanks Microsoft) plus the added overhead would be a bit too much for games. It could slow down realtime net apps (like ZoneAlarm does).

The problem I have with Proxomitron is browsing appears slower compared to Admunch. Even with other browsers like FF or IE, the delay is still there.

This here program is amazing: http://bfilter.sourceforge.net/
It's so fast you won't even know it's running. Uses mainly heurestics (very comprehensive) and can use black lists. Open source too. ;) I haven't seen an ad since I installed it. It's just a simple proxy. From my tests, it doesn't break anything either.

The power Proxomitron lies in its robust nature to capture HTTP traffic information and precisely define rules based on said traffic.

The interface is so seldom used that the point above is rather moot. Proxomitron is rather easy to use, though it does have a steeper learning curve than some more "entry level user" level applications/extensions. Proxomitron is really intended for a more advanced level user that isn't filtering content prior to end-user machine level.

Make certain you are using a Naoko-4 series of the application.

I know Proxomitron is advanced and powerful, but why does that give an excuse for a bad interface? It's not too advanced, it's too ugly. :p Compare it with Ad Muncher's interface and you'll see what I mean. It's not that bad but it could be a lot better.

Actually it is faster since I last tried Proxomitron, yeah.

Understanding Proxomitron's history is the explanation (and not an excuse). One must note that the application's core code is for the most part untouched in over the last two years.

One might ask why this is. This is the answer. I believe out of respect to Scott's work, the application has been left nearly whole aside from a few minor revisions. The fact that it remains so widely used today (even with a host of other options available) is a testament to its power.

There is more to applications than the interface, of course. As it bears repeating, the interface is so seldom used the point regarding its appearance is (as mentioned earlier) moot.

As a long, long time user of Opera (most regulars here can lament of my support of Opera), I have at one point tried nearly every viable option/add-on/extensions/etc (including Ad Muncher). I have yet to find a superior software-based solution to Proxomitron - especially considering it is browser independent (which of course means only one necessary solution when occassionally switching between the various browsers).

Again, take the time to examine the application a bit more carefully. There are a wide variety of informational sources available. A very good resource is the long-standing user group.

Good luck.

After I disabled the button skins the program looks infinitely better actually.. I'm just picky about stuff like that. I know it works well. I'm using it right now and even made my own filters for anandtech.com. I didn't even realize you could make your own filters with it.
