Adaptive Sync for media?

Quick one. I haven't seen anyone mention the implication of adaptive sync for matching frame rates for media such as movies and TV shows. Is it possible it will replace the need to change the refresh rate to match the frame rate of media? If so, what is required for this to be adopted. If not, why would it not work?

The "match refresh rate with video" option in Kodi and Plex Home Theater do this as long as your TV or monitor supports the refresh rate.
