adaptec 2940 weirdness?

trying to reuse some old 18g sca drives (ibm 18Y) on w98 - I have am adaptec 2940 old-old and a 2940 s76-auto 1.21 (asecond latest bios) the sca adapter is set to a low address and wide negotiation disabled.

the old card seems to only allow fdisk to partition 8gig extended -is that a card limitation?

the newer s76 card appears to allow allows bigger partitions but when booting a boot disk the machine hangs at "dmi pool"
(just before it enters windows) most likely Ive forgotten something?

Yes, the 8-GByte ceiling is about the adapter's BIOS supporting the "Int13h extensions" or not.

Check for a SCSI BIOS update with Adaptec. Good luck ... unlike on LSI adapters, Adaptec's use a unique BIOS for each model that doesn't get maintained for too long.
