I'm setting up a new system,

K7 master
amd 1.2
512 ddr
adaptec 19160 scsi adapter
seagate cheetah xl36 lw

and I can't get the scsi adapter to recognize the hard drive. I left all drive jumpers open (default settings) and I get a message "host configuration error", then "BIOS not installed". I have run the host bios config and the furthest I can get is a device time out while the config searches for the drive. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried yet is to set the drive jumper that supplies power to the cable terminator. This is my first experience with scsi, so am I missing something elementary?

Are you configuring this as the boot drive? If so you need to enter the SCSI bios and set the boot device ID to 0 or 1, enable bios, set auto termination. Then you need to set the ID on the Cheetah to 0 or 1 depending on what you selected in the boot bios. If you arent sure just leave the jumpers off and that will be ID 0. Then ensure that you have the Active terminator installed on the LVD cable. Once you access the drive, make sure you have set a partion and made it active also. Set your motherboards bios to boot to floppy first, then SCSI and if you have onboard ATA controller no bootable OS on any HDD on that controller. Its pretty easy once you get used to how SCSI works.. do a search for Garys SCSI FAQ on the net.. its very helpful
