Adaptative CPU Software

I was wondering if anyone know about software that could slow down the clock speed of a computer when not in use and then kick it back up when the user returns.
I want to impliment it in 3 older computers running either a P2 or P3 proc.
Any information on this would be great. Thank you

Nope, this technology needs to be built into the CPUs, like the new AMD 64s.

Shouldn't the idle function (either built into the OS, or by running a separate program like CPUIdle) do the trick? It halts the CPU when not in use.

Isn't this what they use in the AMD mobile procs ?
