The web did NOT suck. It was awesome. It was just slower because we all had modems and it had less content.. because we all had modems.

Advertising pisses me off. I hate how all fvcking websites.. ANANDTECH included.. decide to break up everything into 10 pages when it should just be one long page. Why? to get more clicks..

FVCK CLICKS. AAWRAASDKAFH frustration

Agreed. I wish they'd make ad-free netsurfing like they make commercial-free TV. Hell yeah I 'd pay for it. If there was ad-free internet... then between cable TV, satellite radio and ad-free internet... I could avoid ads with alarming regularity.

I HATE advertising. PERIOD. It needs to DIAF.

The Internet used to be ad free. And it SUCKED. Then banner ads came along, and people threw a fit saying advertising would destroy the web. Turns out it pays for some pretty cool stuff. ;)

Some websites will let you pay to avoid ads. Anandtech used to for these forums. But there aren't generally enough people willing to pay for content that is otherwise free to make it cost-effective.

I'm not calling to make the internet ad-free; I just said I wanted an option so people like me who hate the subconscious brainwashing can go about their internet business in peace. I'm pretty good about knowing what I need without marketing nazis forcing crap down my throat. But I also believe that, due to the fragmented nature of the internet, what I ask is completely impossible. *sighs*

It had less content because content costs money, and it's not cost-effective to give it away for free. The content came mostly from individuals dorking around in their free time writing about what interested them. To say it sucked is a bit of an exaggeration, because for the time it kicked ass. But compared to the Internet of today, it sucked.

I'm not a fan of advertising either, but it pays for much of the content that makes the Internet great.

I don't see them at all, unless they are animated. Animations do catch me eye (I usually will read the animads that show up on the left here at AT).

Also, the ads you see at penny arcade, I'll usually read them as they mesh with the site fairly well.

I've never used one to buy anything, though, and google ad banners aren't even there.

Why?

Remember, e-ads don't really cost much to place, so you can be ignored by a lot of people and still make enough sales to do well.

And unlike other advertising media, the cost of e-ads can be based on their effectiveness, not just their reach.

I had a boss who advertised in a local grocery store. They had a display that rotated ads. He'd brag about how the ad was getting 500,000 impressions per week. Cost him $8000 for a year. That ad got him exactly 0 customers (he was a contractor, and he always asked customers how they heard of him). That ad was not cost-effective.

With Internet ads, they can charged based on whether someone viewed the ad or whether someone CLICKED on the ad. A click is worth a lot more than a view. A view is more or less worthless.

My old boss went out of business, not surprisingly. ;)
Exactly, they have to show results and so people seem to care more, which is a good thing for both the business and the consumer.
