Ad-Aware SE Update Source

Ad-Aware has discontinued updating Ad-Aware 6 SE Personal.

Why?

They say the basic design of this version is no longer capable of dealing with current malware threats. To correct this, they have released Ad-Aware 2007.

The Problem:

Reviews and comments all over the web, including on their own forums, show the new program is buggy and takes up a lot of system resources. You can read about the problems and the requests not to discontinue Ad-Aware SE on their own forums.

What To Do:

1. For now, they are still supporting the for pay version of Ad-Aware 6. You can download updates, here. The current version is SE1R215 23.01.2008.

At the upper right side of the page, you'll see the link to download the current definition file. It's a zipped file. Download it, unzip it and cut and paste it to the Ad-Aware program folder.

C:\Program Files\Ad-Aware

You will be replacing the older file by the same name so, if the system asks you if you want to overwrite it, check "Yes."

I've tried this on my own system, and I haven't seen anything that suggests it isn't working correctly.

I hope Ad-Aware will fix the problems with the new version, but meanwhile, I'll be looking for a good free replacement. Please post if you see any problems with using the Ad-Aware updates. I'm just hoping this is a reasonable short term fix until they get it right.

Which reminds me... SpyBot has a new version, 1.5 DO NOT install it. Their forums also report that it has problems that have not yet been resolved. Fortunately, they're still updating ver. 1.4.

I updated my free version of SE there last night. I'm still trying to decide what to do from now on.

I just spoke with John, who recommended SUPERAntiSpyware. I'll install it this evening, as soon as I Ghost my system.

I always Ghost before installing anything. My basic rule is, never risk fscking anything up any more than you can un-fsck it. 😛

Yeah its too bad about this and Spybot. They were both great products until recently.

I would recommend SuperAntiSpyware Very good detection rates. Also 2nd Harvey's recommendation of Superspywareremover. Good product 🙂

FWIW Harvey mistyped the name of the program as something that is rogue and you're recommending it? At least he got the actual URL correct. 😛

Harvey meant to say SUPERAntiSpyware

anyone used the pro version which also gives real time scanning?

I haven't tried it yet, but there are some complaints about it in their forums.

Complaints about AAW or SAS?
