Acura TSX owners - how fast do your brakes wear out?

Hey all,

I've got a Acura TSX and my back brakes seem to wear out very fast. I've had them replaced at 27k miles and now I'm at 45k miles and the dealer is telling me that my back brakes are worn to 4.5 out of 8, my fronts are at about 5.5 / 8. I think I'm getting screwed, I don't drive hard and I don't brake hard. I've got a 60 mile daily commute (round trip) and 50 of those miles are freeway miles. When I ask the dealers service adviser if there is something wrong with my brakes they just shrug and say the brakes on the TSX wear faster than other Acura's and then they try and blame it on my driving style. I've talked to some people and they say that the front brakes are responsible for 70% of the cars breaking so it doesn't make sense for it wear this quickly. I'm just wondering if anyone else with a TSX has a similar issue.

Do the brakes feel worn down to you? If they do, it's probably a problem with the breaks themselves, and not your driving style. Either way though, you're getting lied to badly. The excuse of "the breaks wear down fast" is utter BS, I'm sorry. My mom's SUV (GMC Jimmy) is 7 years old and it hasn't needed new breaks yet, and my mom drives hard.

some cars wear them more quickly than others... depending on design
bmws are known to wear them out fast

~25k isnt completely unreasonable, and given that theyre not completely worn out but less than half done, i dont think its something to take up with the dealer... even though most dealers are scum

the OEM pads on the TSX are crap. get some decent pads installed by someone other than your dealer and you'll be good to go for a long while.

That's not bad. My 04 TSX with about the same miles (I think I'm around 46k) just went in for service and they said I'm around a 2 to 2.5.

I also don't drive very aggressively (45 mile roundtrip commute on the freeway) so I think it's just how these brakes wear.

05 TSX nowhere close to the miles needed for changing but I've heard the TSX does burn through pads. check out the tsx forums

Ok, thanks for the replies. I was worried that the dealer was trying to pull a fast one on me. I'm still wondering why the back breaks would wear out faster than the fronts. I've been told that most of the braking power comes from the front breaks.

the rears on the TSX are setup to take the brunt of the stopping force.

Depends on how you drive. According to the average, and my experience with the first pair, my rear pads have some 5000 miles extra on them so far, and still good.

It's brakes, not breaks.

Highway speeds cause your brakes to have to work much harder to bring your car to a stop each time you do it.

Rear brakes may be of a different design than the front. Since rears USUALLY wear less, Acura probably put less material back there so that they could save money. (And you get to change brakes at all four wheels at the same time.)
4.5 vs. 5.5 is insignificant.

Two things

1) They are brakes

2) A brake job isn't that hard, you can probably manage it yourself for cheaper.

Pick up a hayne's manual and follow the instructions they give on either checking it or replacing them, you'll quickly see that things like brake pads hardly take any time and you can save a lot on labor by doing smaller things yourselfv. Incase you don't know, hayne's manuals will give you step by step instructions with lots of pictures, it's a book of DIY guides basically, goldmine IMO.

a brake job is arguably easier than oil change. no need to fill up and move a sloshy oil catch bucket around. just need a C-clamp and some grease and youre good

Ok, from all the posts it sounds like it's not a issue I should be worried about. This car just seemed wear out very quickly, My last 2 cars would go about 70,000 miles before a brake job was needed. This TSX is only lasting me 35k miles, it seemed like something was messed up.

I have an 04 TSX at 68,000 miles now. I've changed them twice, once at 30,000 and once at 55,000. The rear brakes do wear out faster than the front. I do equal amount of city driving and freeway driving. So your situation is not entirely abnormal.
