My understanding is that Acura will cover most late model trans problems unless it was abused. Even if it is officially out of warranty.
yeah the 2nd gen/5 speed auto TLs had weak trannies. H/A gives a freebie 100K warranty on the trannies, supposedly even people substantially outside the window, H/A will split the cost if you contact them. Supposedly 03, the last year of the 2G TL was partially fixed. 04+ is not considered affected. For 2007 the TL got another substantial tranny upgrade.
The previous designs (pre 07) were 3 shaft designs, honda auto trannies are sort of like DSG/manual construction in terms of the gears being on parallel axis instead of traditional autos which use planetary gearsets. Of course honda autos still retain the torque converter.
My theory on why the honda autos were failing is because they tried to cram too many gears/clutchpacks into too small a package/setup and then tied it to a fairly high power V6. But I think you even see this situation affecting even the new camry/avalon auto trannies now, which some are also having problems.
The 07+ TL is a 4 shaft design now, which lets honda spread out the gears/clutchpacks, so there is less packaging constraints. They also probably did the redesign so they can later add more gears easily.
