actually considering buying a hyundai...

the more i think about it, the more it makes sense

good warrenty
cheap to buy
insurance is dirt cheap
good gas milage

considering that i may have to potentially drive 30 miles each way to school, is there any reason not to get a hyundai ?

Which model, trim and transmission are you considering?

If I wanted an econobox I'd get a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS (or GT) on clearance right now for around $10,500 manual.

gf bought one, even included maintenance (oil changes, tire rotation, etc.) for 3 years! It was a no-brainer. She will graduate soon and after she's making some dough, she trades this off on something nicer.

Well, they can provide a courtesy car if you really need it, but she's had ZERO problems in almost 2 years except for a rattle and the light on the AC button doesn't work right.

On the other hand my parents Buick LeSabre had several problems in the first 2 years, as did my Dakota. At 3 times the sticker.

Demo or year-old Sonata? Quiet, manumatic transmission, decent radio, good sized car, decent engine.

What brought you down from the land of BMW 7-series?

Compared to their competition Hyundai doesn't have outstanding gas mileage no matter what model you are looking at. For the price you usually can get more features with Hyundai but their cars are more rough around the edges, fit and finish are not the same as Toyota or Honda standards. Personally the only model that catches my eye is the Tiburon and the only thing that has going for it is its price. That V-6 has less power than the 4's in a Celica GT-S or an RSX Type S, the tranny is really notchy and I can't say that the styling is better.

Hyundai has come a long way, they aren't the crap boxes that burned oil and left smoke trails that they used to be. Still, I'd walk by the Hyundai lot without looking twice.

Negatives: poor resale value, below-average initial quality, poor reliability, poor service at dealerships, poor safety ratings (on some models IIRC), UGLY (some models).

That said, they do have their positives like you mentioned and some of their vehicles are better than others. The warranty and purchase price are great but these cars do have their downsides. Given your price range I would take a look at the Elantra GT.

the 7-series is on hold for another 6 years or so 😀

I test drove a Sonata recently and I was impressed. Ended up with a Mazda6 though cause I was even more impressed with that car. Both were in the 21K range (loaded).

Also look at the Pontiac Sunfire. With rebates and % you can get one for less then 12K easy. Great motors and would do what you like.

I keep hearing that Hyundai quality is getting better and better all the time. My wife has a 2002 Kia Spectra (Kia is owned by Hyundai, if I recall correctly) and she's had zero problems with it in the year that she's owned it. It's not a bad little car for 12 grand.

I think the more recent year hyundai' look pretty good. Never had a ride in one or heard anything about how bad they turn at say 30-60K miles, but hey, I say go for it!!
