actual speed difference between SCSI vs. IDE?

i have an 80gb WD SE drive, and its my only drive in my system

i want to get like an 18 or 18.4gb SCSI boot drive to only load windows and my apps on and keep all of my crap on the IDE drive. plus, i use photoshop, so an extra drive would be nice for speed.

how much of a difference in boot time and OS related operations will i see? does the OS matter? will one OS be faster than another? i want to use XP but i am willing to change according to which will get the best performance.

I use a 100GB WD "JB" drive now getting it when they first came out in 2001 and I thought it be fast but I used to use a X15 and after that a 10K III and the boot times are just night and day I'd say the SCSI takes a quarter the time that the IDE JB drive does. I was thinking about going to a IBM or Seagate 10K or 15K drive for a Boot drive for awhile just have not followed thought since my system has just been so stable I don't wanna F it up with a SCSI card and new drive :) I just don't tinker with my puter like I used to...

wow...are you a clone of me or what? :)

i wasnt sure if it would make that big of a difference..but i guess so

how will it effect gaming? if i got an 18gb drive, could i install games on it or would i put them on the 80gb IDE drive? it would probably be faster on the main drive, right? i really dont know, that just seems logical to me.

does OS matter?

Win2K has better SCSI performance than XP.. they still have a problem in XP unless you use dynamic disk.

i learned about dynamic disks and even did a search for it, but i cant figure out exactly what the difference is. is this the thing that has 1mb left at the end of the drive? what on earth is that for?

I was under the impression that on bootup DOS is still limited by its drivers.

The true speed of ATA66+ isn't even unlocked until after the OS loads, right?

yeah i have heard that also

what about SCSI drives that supposedly have like ATA320? even ATA166? is their a benefit to this? is it even called ATA...
