There is so much involved, if you where to tell someone about a Active Directory how would you explain it. Also, what do you think the benefits are?

The Active Directory is a catalogue of objects (computers, printers, users, groups) most commonly taking shape as a tree of objects. The one major benefit I can think of is that since it is like a tree, it behaves in a hierarchical manner. Security and group membership can be nested.

I would explain it with a simple sentence: "My understand is that AD is basically LDAP, on steroids that happen to mess it up a little bit while making other parts of it pretty kick ass, too bad its Windows only."
