Active Directory Replication...

dawks

We started with a Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain. We recently purchased a new server with Windows Server 2003, which is going to take over for the old server. I updated the Schema on the Windows 2000 box to make it compatible with Server 2003 (must be done before dcpromo will run). Everything went fine (all the current users/objects were copied to the new server initially). Now I've noticed if I add users/objects to "Active Directory Users and Computers" on the Server 2003 box, they don't show up on the 2000 Server Box. However, if I add users/objects to the 2000 Server box, they do replicate to the Server 2003 box.

How can I fix this so they go both ways? Or should I work about this since I plan on demoting and removing the Server 2000 box...

Have you looked at the Directory Services Event Logs on both Servers for any clues?

I did, and there was one error related to DNS, that stopped showing up about 5 days ago. It said it would repeat every 12 hours if it continued to be a problem. So I thought it had resolved itself. I decided to investigate the DNS issue further and found a small issue there. I fixed it, and now it appears to be working correctly!

I created a new user on the Server 2003 DC and it replicated to the 2000 Server DC as fast as I could switch remote desktops to check.

Thanks for 'help' 😉

Using ADUC isn't really a great way to see if replication is working. You would be better off using the diagnostic tools designed to do that, like repadmin, replmon, dcdiag, netdiag, etc.
