Domains are NT 4 only, AD is for Win2K and up. You can run AD in mixed mode to allow NT4 servers but it's not the best idea.

If AD is giving them problems tell them to figure out what they f'd up, AD is very tied to DNS if DNS isn't working well neither will AD.
