Active Directory Migration Stories 2k -->2k3

I've been putting it off for a while now, but it's time to migrate the 2000 domain to a new box and update it to a 2003 AD.

Just wondering if anyone had smooth experiences with this. I'll be using the ADMT v3.

I just hope it doesn't gank the domain.

ADMT v2 worked great for me. Moved about 1000 users, a few hundred groups, and a dozen or so DCs and fileservers, no issues.

Um, why would you use ADMT if you are just upgrading the domain to 2003? ADMT is for migrating from one domain to another. There's no need to do that with an upgrade. You can either do an in-place upgrade (just upgrade the OS on your DC) or a migration by adding a new 2003 DC to the domain for each existing 2000 DC and decommissioning the old ones. I recommend the latter plan.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Well first off, the domain MUST be moved off of the current box, because it is super crappy (200 MHz PII).

The domain had also had an inline upgrade to 2000 from NT, so I'm hesitant to do another inline upgrade.

I have a rackmount with 2003 Server setup that I would like to migrate to.

You're saying I wouldn't use the ADMT in this case?

Nah. Build 2003 box, promote to DC, move FSMO roles cleanly, change scripts to point to new box, move data, etc.
