Active Directory and file permissions?

We have no real procedure in place for granting rights to certain parts of the network, so we have a mix mash of stuff floating everywhere. Recently I began locking down groups of users with filer permissions and noticed that half of the directories give users full access, while the half is everything but full access. Should anyone ever have full access to any drive, other than admins?

Only you can make that decision.

Typically I give them permissions to only what they need. Anything else and you are playing with fire.

I'm kind of in the same situation. I inherited a network that had one share with full access for everyone and another share with limited access. Everything is now configured so that users have access to what they have to have (ie, groups/departments)

Just remember, share level permissions should (normally) be full, and you use NTFS permissions to determing real access (it's much more detailed/robust)
