Hi all,

Anyone knows how to enable Active Desktop in Win NT Server? I've already installed IE 5.5 but that option isn't available...

Thanks.

lol, yea but you won't like it.

The only way to get it running is to uninstall the IE's you have and install ie4 with active desktop. Then upgrade IE4 to 5.5

Hi,

Just thought I'd mention that there is another way. You might look here for starters. You have to use the IEAK to do the deed. To be frank, it's unlikely that the effort would be worth it. Active Desktop on an NT 4.0 server can cause some pretty hokey behaviors. I recall one interesting example. Desiring to avail herself of the advantages of the desktop update but unwilling to suffer the slings and arrows of users fiddling with Active Desktop a friend of mine applied a restriction to Active Desktop on a shared workstation. The result was that Active Desktop features were unavailable to members of the Administrators group, but AVAILABLE to all of the regular users! (It was correctable, but did require some research and fiddling around. Turns out the IEAK can handle it correctly, but you have to be careful about the details.)

Regards,
Jim

If it's just a toolbar (like the desktop update's QuickLaunch feature) that you need, you might look for a third party alternative. Some of those are less likely to have adverse effects upon the OS. I just did a quick search and found this page that lists a fair number of them. I have no experience with any of these, but I notice that Gregory Braun has a freeware utility listed on the page. I have used several of his utilities (shareware and freeware) and have always found them to be of high quality.

Hope that this works out for you one way or the other. Toolbars can be useful.

Regards,
Jim
