Ok, I've got a couple options for xp activation cuz it's not working and the 'customer service' robot will not let me talk to a person.
1. I could get a legit copy of the upgrade version and try to use it. I don't actually own a straight up copy of windows 98 or 2000 or whatever, but I have the stuff that comes bundled with old machines I've had. I can't use those to install the os, but I can use it to prove to the upgrade installation (i own 1 pro upgrade cd and 1 home upgrade cd) that I own an earlier version of windows, which allows me to install xp from the upgrade cd. The question is, will the activation work, or will the activation somehow 'know' that I'm being naughty and don't have a legit older windows? If this is gonna work, I'm going to do this because I don't want to wait a week or whatever for a full version to get here once I order it (and pay around the same amount).
2. I could fine a full edition cheap somewhere and order it, which means I can't use the comp I just built and I am microsoft's bitch, but it is sure to solve the problem.
3. Reinstall and try to make the copy I have work through other methods of which I am currently unfamiliar. I believe this is doable but that it will be tedious, possibly need multiple reinstalls to work, and may need more down the road and more cd keys to keep going. In the end it may be worth the 90 bucks to me to not deal with it.
