The MAC address is part of the fingerprint used, as are other things. Unless you have multiple licenses, the activation is going to prevent you from installing on multiple machines....

If it's WinXP Retail-Boxed Version, then you can install and use it on one computer at a time ad infinitum, maybe with a phone call after the first few times, as per the license agreement. If it's an OEM license, it's "consumable," you consumed it when you installed it on the previous computer.

When you activate an XP license for the first time, XP stores the characteristics of 8 items from the computer that total 10 votes. For example the graphics card has one vote. The physical hard drive with XP on it has one vote. The label ID of the partition with XP on it has one vote. The processor model has one vote. The RAM size has one vote. The MAC address is the only item that has 3 votes. To see the whole list, look on the Microsoft web site.

After that, XP frequently checks the items and gets a negative vote (3 if it is the MAC address) for every item that is different from the original set.

If there are more than 3 negative votes, XP requires reactivation.

If you only change the MAC address, you will still not need to reactivate since there will be 3 negative votes. But, as soon as you change one more thing (that has a vote), you will be asked to reactivate.

I have the exact answer to your question. TRY IT!! You will get your answer way faster. If all else fails call up Microsoft and they can tell you how you are allowed to use their software.
