Activating new iPhone with new AT&T service, number assigned or get a choice?

AT&T sales rep over the phone said I would get a choice of a few different numbers when establishing new wireless service (not iPhone since that can't be done over the phone.) Does the same thing happen when activating a new iPhone with new service, via iTunes, AT&T and/or Apple Store?

Seems like I could avoid a crappy cell number for the rest of my life if I order a new phone (not iPhone) through AT&T through their customer service number, then convert over to an iPhone.

Is this your first mobile phone (no prior number)?

What are you, 8 years old!?!?!

I would be dropping a work-provided piece of garbage for a new cell phone I will be paying for out of my own pocket

If you are getting the iPhone at an AT&T store, they can check to see what numbers are available, and you can pick what you want. I don't know if that's the case if you go to an Apple store.

I got an iPhone yesterday. The sales woman asked if I wanted to pick a number or had any preferences. I didn't care. I got a good one. Easy to remember.
