A real problem is that the US has indeed been the world police and it's cost everyone to some degree. True that it keeps America in a unique position which is valuable to us and beneficial to Europe and some others however current times shows that the old model is onerous and unreliable. We can no longer be trusted to fill that role and I for one don't want for us to bear the costs at so many levels. Note this is not a shot at you or Europe, if anything it's at those who lead our nation in DC.

Merkle and Macron and eventually the EU as a whole need to come up with an effective defense because we are no longer your ally in any way you can depend upon. We're controlled by a person who is reprehensible on a good day, and a potential nightmare if his mental stability degrades much more. Once upon a time I would have loved to come to your nation, perhaps meet with you and those like you. Now I would wonder what people would be thinking about "the American". Other than for our money I don't know why we'd be welcomed outside our borders.

The real way to hurt Putin and his circle isn't with diplomatic or military actions, go for the money. He and other nefarious Russians have huge amounts of cash, securities, property, etc all over the western world. Begin confiscating it and bar high level Putin associates from entry to the US/EU.

Spot on so why don't we do it? My understanding is that Putin is likely to be the wealthiest person on Earth by far. Half a trillion or so buys a lot of influence and he's KGB. That combination means that he has the means and expertise to control people either by buying them outright, threat of physical harm or blackmail.

How deep is that influence in our federal, state and local governments and I don't mean only a few Republicans? Jeebus it sounds like McCowen time, but the more that we see the more I have to wonder. Exactly why isn't going after the money a high priority by anyone in Congress?

Ding ding.

Tell fucktards like Germany to stop doing major dependencies with Russia like building a dedicated gas pipeline.

For all the people that complain about Russia and our election let me just say this: We as the US are doing FAR MORE to combat Russia (sanctions, freezing assets, etc..) than anyone else in the western world. Let that sink in.

Why are the fortunes of Putin and his ilk secure? There are vast fortunes which we don't go after and Putin doesn't give a shit as long as he has his pile of gold and can rule with impunity. FAR MORE means a stinkier fart.

We did partially but didn't go nearly far enough. The UK shielded a lot of action because guess who's banks and property market washes a lot of Russian cash.

There was a reason that Trump Tower meeting was about the Magnitsky Act though. Putin fucking hates it because it has tangibly impacted his circle of oligarchs.

I understand why they're doing it even if I disagree with the strategy. Germany decades ago decided to do business with Russia (starting with the Soviets) to create interdependency that lessened the chances of war breaking out that could basically kill them all. I comprehend the logic but not sure if it still holds relevance today.

I never said he wasnt? You must be misinterpreting my post.

I'll make this more specific for you: There is no doubt our congress and government have done FAR more to combat Russia than anyone else in the western world.

The real answer is: Because the same people that can go after those fortunes are reliant on those fortunes. Undoubtedly that money is flowing around to thousands of interested parties around the world to ensure there's a lot of people who depend on it, so it *doesn't* get locked down.

True dat.
Thinking back to WW2 and how much Russia bled to fight the nazis, current state of affairs is really really sad.
And I totally agree, European NATO members needs to up the ante! But besides that there is the cyber and proxy warmongering going on *right now* that does NOT need a factual 2% GDP spending to create a response to. We need to gather NATO and declare ... cyber war? on Putin.. Public statement... Public because the civilian Joe needs to know and understand wtf is going on!

Lol OP. War? Yeah, okay. Put your GI Joes away and make yourself a sandwich.

I admit that I haven't looked at it closely, but my understanding was always that Germany cooperates with Russia because they don't want to freeze to death in the winter.

Not surprising that an Elon Musk stan has such a childish reaction to a story like this, but no, I would have ridiculed anyone that wrote an OP like that.
