Act of submission or what?

Me and my friend were debating this. One of my kitten likes to be rolled on his back and have his belly rubbed. Does this show an act of submission? Or of dominance?

I thought it was submission if the animal exposes his/her belly to someone else.
Friend thinks it's showing his dominance over me by doing so

All cats think they own people, not the other way around.

So: It's showing his dominance over me by doing so.

Animals lower their heads to show a sign of submission, dummy.

"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" - not everyone who smokes has a homosexual frustration and is venting through symbolism.

Your kitty just likes its tummy scratched.

My cats just like to have their bellies rubbed. They know I control the food, so their dominance is limited.

For a dog it's an act of submission. Kitty just wants a tummy rub. :p:)

It is also a sign of trust.

submission all the way. the kitten is putting itself in a vulnerable position.

cats will roll onto their backs in a fight with another cat occasionally... the way they scratch with their hind legs, grab with their front legs, and bite all combined creates a pretty worthy attack

i dont know if i would automatically write that off as submission

Yes, because combat is everyday behaviour.

It is for one of my cats. He attacks the other one at least 3 times a day. Or he attacks us, he is just playing but he can get pretty pissed when he is fighting my GF or I.

That's just play. Cats appear to be fighting, but they really just play rough. If a cat is really trying to hurt something, they lay it right open with those claws and they don't lie down while doing it.

There's a big difference between a "feline dispute" and a full-out brawl. There's a reason they call two girls having a hair-pulling clawfest a catfight, y'know. :p

Since they can't say "Hey, get away from my catnip!" to each other, they opt for the bite instead. Or they may just want to playfight - like when they go after your ankles.

Heh. My cat will occasionally attack me when she wants to play. So I'll get down on the floor crouching next to her and hold one of my arms out ready for her to attack. When she leaps, I yank it out of the way at the last second. I do this over and over again and she starts to get wicked pissed because she can't get me. Its really pretty funny.

submission.

as said - showing belly/throat is submission.

Another thing with cats is if they close their eyes. If you having trouble with a cat you can close your eyes and they think you trust them.
