I bought and coated the board of one of my remote control electronic speed controls with MG Chemical acrylic conformal coating. I did this to help waterproof the esc. http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/protective-coatings/conformal/acrylic-conformal-coating-419c/

The coating went well but the esc has an external capacitor on the power wires. From what I've read its purpose is to prevent sparking when plugging in the battery. I've also read of other removing it with no ill effects. My esc is also similar or the same as another esc which doesn't have the cap.

What I want to know is if it is safe or necessary to apply conformal coating to the top and bottom of the capacitor? Once I'm finished I will apply heatshrink to hold it in place like the pic in this link.

those kinds of electrolytic capacitors are made up of a thin aluminum can sealed at the base with that black rubber plug. the 'K' you see at the top is a safety feature where excess pressure with predictably break through. the conformal coating will be fine on the top and bottom. i'd apply it around the leads and any breaks in the label.
