Backing up to the HD and then burning to a data DVD works fine. Are you backing up from within Windows or using the Acronis boot CD?

TrueImage 8 had a limitation that it required packet writing software (like InCD) to burn directly to DVD. I figured they would have addressed that in v9, but apparently not.

Thanks BlueWeasel.
I've used 8.x at work a bazillion times, but now have a few DVDRs here so I figured I'd give 9.x and backup to DVD. I was planning on backing up within windows versus boot media; should I consider otherwise?

Well, I've never backed up my Windows partition from within Windows. I'm sure Acronis can do it just fine, but going back to my early Ghost days, I'm used to backing up from DOS to ensure no files are in use.

Either way, you'll be fine.

Ah ok... well rest assured that TI backup within windows works flawlessly, done it many times now.

Thanks for the input... now to burn

Even TI 8 will back up to DVD's - provided you have a DVD-UDF capability installed.

Not trying to hijack your thread so if this ticks ya off let me know and I'll start another one. ;)

I've heard of ghost and Acronis but have never used either program because I've never seen the need. But maybe I have misunderstood their uses. Do I understand correctly that I could do a complete format/reinstall of my HD/OS and then upon completion use this Acronis software to make an image that would allow me to never have to go through the complete format/reinstall process again?

Also, the product description says it can clone an hd and basically allow you to move that data to another hd. Is it as easy as it sounds?

Thanks guys and once again OP if this bothers ya just let me know.

pretty much.
Thats the whole point, install everything "perfectly" and clone the disk. If you want to format, you just restore the image and you're back to where you imaged from (OS, patches, applications etc.) No reinstalling 100 small apps and tweaking everything to your liking.

As far as migrating data from one HD to another, while it could techincally be done with TI, the best program for that is Acronis Migrate Easy.

I believe DVD-UDF is simply packet writing software like DirectCD or InCD (ie, the burner works like a floppy drive...the data can be saved to it directly).

That's a problem I have with Acronis. How many people have this software? Not many. There's plenty other software that have the ability to burn specific data to DVD without needing a dedicated burning program like Nero. Why can't Acronis do that?

It's a bad idea to create the image directly to a DVD.

1. It's slower

2. If one error occurs you have wasted your DVD media and of course your time.

Create the image to hard drive first and then burn the backup.tib with Nero. If you use Ultra ISO you can also make the DVD bootable with the TI program.

i downloaded and started using acronis TI 9 but am a little confused...

i thought you could save your entire disk or partion (OS, drivers, patches, apps) to a DVD so that if you wanted to do a clean install, you could do it from that one DVD disk.

but in the software i think it says cloning to hard drive only... can someone explain?

thanks

TI can only backup directly to DVD if you have packet-writing software like DirectCD/DVD installed (and most don't). So, the solution is to backup the images to the hard drive and set the file size to the media you are using (ie, 700MB CD or 4.3GB DVD). That way, you'll have several image files that can be burned individually to CD/DVD.

You can later restore directly from the CD/DVDs, as TrueImage will request the images in the correct order.

What I would do is use TI to make a bootable CD (under Tools --> Create Rescue Media). Go ahead and make your partition backup, burn on CD/DVDs, etc. Then, if you ever need to restore it, just simply use the rescue CD to boot into TI and restore.

Using this method, you can still restore it even if you can't boot into Windows.
