Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost?

I've got a nice fresh install of XP on a SATA drive. I don't have another SATA drive, just a regular ATA. How about your recommendations on backup software and possible complications imaging from SATA to ATA and back.

I used an older version of Ghost (came with a motherboard) for several years, but recently upgraded to TrueImage and love it.

Ghost is yesterday's news. Go Acronis! (It also gets you away from Symantec - yechh!)

Does True Image do "bare metal" imaging (not restore) to a network path? By bare metal, I mean running off a bootable disk rather than from within Windows. I want to clone a new laptop that didn't come with restore disks.

I'm sure Ghost has done this for years, but it seemed like a pain to setup.

Yes - TrueImage auto-prepares a bootable CD - that is the way I always use it - it boots to a Linux-based GUI. That way you can clone or image things without regard to the installed OS.

I'll vote Ghost on this one. I've had issues with Acronis True Image, which caused me to have to reinstall XP. I can't remember exactly what happened, but it was a big aggrevation. Haven't had any issues with Ghost v9 though. I've restored about 3 different images so far, and all were flawless.

Acronis.

I was using 7.0 but recently upgraded to 8.0 because 7.0 would not work with my Dell 8400 using SATA drives. 8.0 is flawless and I routinely restore my clean install via my home network with zero problems. It's a great piece of software.GP

TrueImage Rocks! I was using Ghost for a while but would get corrupted backups that would not restore from time to time... Plus Ghost has to boot into DOS but TrueImage can do backups right within windows... it's awesome!
