Acronis True Image Home 2012

Is this program version any good? I used the previous versions before like 2010 but never the latest one yet. Is it worth getting ? I keep hearing mixed reviews.
 
TI 2012 works perfectly for me. I only use it for cloning drives,and in that regard, I always use its created bootable media (flash or CDR).

Win 7 has been fully implemented starting in 2011, but better in 2012. It is a tool I would not be without. There are other freebies that can do the job such as Clonezilla, but I have used TI regularly since version 4 and am wholly comfortable with its GUI
 
I have used 2010, 2011, 2012, never had problems with any of them.

Nothing extra in 2012 that caught my attention but I just like to run the latest of my installed programs and the license was cheap anwyay (got it for like $35 USD)

Probably not, unless you are dealing with SSDs. I have both installed on thumbdrives, and they seem to work equally well for cloning.
 
I've been looking into Acronis True Image Home 2012, but the astounding amount of negative reviews really throw me off.

What I want to do is reinstall a fresh version of Windows 7 on a laptop, install the necessary drivers and software, and create a back-up on a thumb drive. I'm giving it to a family member, so I'd rather they have a a nice clean install to revert back to if necessary. Can Acronis create a bootable thumb drive that can apply a backup image from the thumb drive?

Will Acronis do what I'm looking for and will it do it well? I appreciate any advice. 🙂

If you are wanting an image of the hard drive once windows is installed then you are looking at 32 Gigs plus any added on programs.
 
as far as i know, Acronis Home Image 2012 will do create a hard drive partition to recover your OS. Similar to what what HP, DELL, ETC do.

Hmm... I wouldn't expect it to be that big. I mean... I use 40GB SSDs on my server and HTPCs, and I think the relatively basic Windows install only ends up being about 16GB.

My plan is to install Windows 7, install drivers (still not sure if I want to look for upgrades beyond what's on Dell's website), install any necessary system software (Intel SSD Manager, etc), install Acronis and create the image. I don't want stuff like Microsoft Office or anything like that on there when the image is created.

I would imagine that I'm probably looking at around 20GB or so. I did purchase a fairly speedy USB 3 thumb drive (based off the recent Anandtech USB 3.0 thumb drive round-up), which I think will work well when it comes to imaging.

I thought about that, but isn't it possible for malware to hide in restore partitions since they aren't overwritten? I guess I figured it would be safer, and also... I put a (120GB) SSD in the laptop, which I'd hate to cut another ~20GB out just for a restore partition.
 
I've been using True Image for a while and I think it works great. Recently upgraded to 2012.

I've only had some minor issues - for example when the drive letter of an external drive I use for backups changed, it wouldn't recognize the backup archive even when I changed the drive letter in the configuration. I could not continue with the incremental backup. Had to create a new archive from scratch instead.

I've also had it complain about files being "locked" a few times even though they were clearly not in use, or a message saying I'm almost out of disk space when there was 300GB left.

But on the whole it works great and does what it's supposed to do. I only run file backups though, no full disk backups here. Re-installing the OS and applications after a hard disk crash or similar is no big deal as long as my personal files are safe.

What specific advantages does 2011/2012 offer with Win 7?

Can I use my 2010 ver for simple backups with Win & and SSD?
 
Both work equally well for me, but 2012 is a shade faster. Visually there is no difference. 2012 is supposedly better tuned to deal with SSDs.
