As a research exercise, I originally tried sysprep to migrate my old xp (amd athlon 2500) to new build sb i5-2400, asrock h67, 8GB ram, but that didn't boot at all. Then I tried latest acronis true image 2011 w/ plus pack, which is supposed to allow you to restore to dissimilar hardware, according to the company's marketing blurb.

I was sceptical this would work, especially considering how old my old setup was. I first set sata to ide/compatible mode in bios. To my surprise, it worked first time. No bsod. All my apps worked as normal. I'm not so impressed with dumbed down UI, which made it less intuitive to use, ironically. Be extra careful when you restore an image. By default, it overwrites 'whole' disk in the destination. You have to dig into one of the options to select which partition in the destination you want to restore to.

So I just want to put this out there for posturity. If someone is happy with their winxp setup, with years of tweaks and customization, and want to migrate to new machine, try true image 2011 w/ plus pack.
