Acrobat Reader 9.x is 200megs?!

Is something screwy w/my copy, or is it really 200megs?

If the latter, what are some alternatives?

Even at 33MB it is way too big for just a reader. I will stay with reader V6

Are they still patching that version, if not it's probably not a good idea for security reasons.

I'd use Foxit Reader. Adobe can go to hell. Their garbage reader is one of the first things I remove from a computer when I'm enhancing performance.

Wish I could use just foxit.
But foxit is much slower to render pages on high res publications.

Have you tried other alternatives? I'm curious, as I've never had issues with Foxit, but if I run into some, I'd rather use something other than Adobe.

been using Foxit for a LONG time, I generally use PDF's downloaded from various printer manufacturers for paper crafting. NEVER had a problem with it. Ohhh and it loads in a fraction of the time adobe reader does.

I don't know if V6 is still being patched or not. But I only open pdfs I know are clean and my av scans all downloads before an app will open them. I started disliking Adobe when it got to V7 and I was no longer able to pick my own default directory instead of Adobe picking a default location for me. And I do not need the "text to speech" feature which began in V7

I wish I didn't have to use adobe. Adobe software becomes more bloated with every passing day.
The files I have trouble with are mainly digital downloads of magazines that are huge, 2-300MB with full color pages. Everything else works fine in foxit.

Why do they keep constantly updating reader anyway. What *IS* there to update? it makes no sense. All it needs to do is be able to display text and pictures. I don't know why they have to overcomplicate pdfs so much.

I still use Adobe Reader 9.0. Foxit reader doesn't show some PDFs of mine.

make sure that, after installing Foxit, you install the free JPEG2000 plugin. you can download it from Foxit's website or you can install it from the app's Help menu.

personally, i like Foxit better. i dont even have Acrobat installed. and everytime i fixing someones computer, i advise them to dump Acrobloat in favour of Foxit.

as a "plan-B", i use the free and open source Sumatra. so, if someday Foxit cant handle a PDF, Sumatra will.

like i just told the other forum member, maybe you need to install the free JPEG2000 plugin. alternatively, try Sumatra. Acrobat both sucks and blows -- despite its physical impossibility.

I use Acrobat 9 and Web to PDF plug-in in FireFox 3, and unless it's a large PDF file with a lot of images, PDFs are fast. I switch it up between either loading a PDF in a browser tab, or opening it directly into Acrobat. Either way, unless my system is running slow, PDFs are pretty snappy for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. For now, I'll keep Adobe Reader 9 as it's reasonably fast for me and I don't really open that many PDF's in the first place.

- makes ask.com default search engine
- Installs Foxit Toolbar
- Installs free links to Ebay

Does PDFXviewer have the same problems like Foxit with huge digital downloads of magazines that are huge, 2-300MB with full color pages like Modelworks was saying?

Oh, sorry about that. It's only 1 box, you have to uncheck at install, but you do have to do it. It's for Yahoo Toolbar. If you uncheck that, the install is clean. Annoying, but I guess if gives Foxit a little money, for a great free product.
