ACPI problem with WinXP, Win2K

I have a bunch of machines that someone else installed winXP and win2K on. ACPI was disabled in BIOS, and so windows shuts dow to the "It is now OK to turn off your computer" screen. Re-enabling ACPI doesn't change anything. I know I can reinstall to correct the problem, but that seems like killing a fly with a sledgehammer. A registry setting? Idunno. Anyone able to help?
