ACPI in Windows 2000 worth it?

I'm so freakin sick of the fact that Windows 2000 installs everything on the same IRQ. I currently have the following on IRQ 11: Voodoo3 3000AGP, Creative SB Live, Highpoint ATA100IDE controller, USB, and my Linksys piece o' da crap nic. since my hd's are on the ata controller, and my mouse is USB, here is what happens, when I load Windows 2000 w/ 320MB ram I get choppy sound and sticking mouse after entering username while windows get the network connection going and stuff. Gaming blows. I can't even use instant messanger without sound going to crap. I hear that if you disable ACPI in the bios and set plug n' play os to no (which it is set to anywho), W2K will allow you to assing IRQ's. 1 question: any advantages of acpi (aside from standby)? Microsoft can stick their IRQ steering up their rear :(

If you've got enought troubles with ACPI mode, then just change/reinstall WIn2K in Standard PC mode. Go into device manager, click on Computer, and then change Advanced Configuration Power Interface PC to Standard PC by changing the driver, and then reboot.

Hope that works for you. Good luck.

I have ACPI off and PnP OS on.

I only have 1 IRQ being shared. Irq 5 has my 2nd NIC and a USB a "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller".

The other thing is for power managment I have "Power management controlled by APM", which is currently set to no. If I disable ACPI should I set this to yes?

Set it to YES, and enable APM in the Power Options under Control Panel. Win2K won't be able to power off the computer if you do not set this option.

OK, I've disabled ACPI in the bios, restarted, W2k went through and reinstalled the drivers for pretty much everything, a few reboots later, everything seems ok BUT, when I go to shut the computer down it will come up saying it is now safe to shut off my computer. I have tried this with power managment controlled by APM both on and off, and either way it does the same thing. Not to big of a deal, well, actually, its annoying enough that it ticks me off. I've tried clearing the escd (don't know if that matters for pm), nothing, same thing. Any ideas?

My post above tells you how to fix this. Go to Control Panel, Power Options, then enable APM on the APM tab.

Do you have both ACPI and APM settings in the BIOS? Turn ACPI off and APM on.

I have use ACPI power management turned off, and power management controlled by APM turned on. Those are the only two options that refer to either apm or acpi power management.
