Acoustipak

I have an ANTEC AMG37000 and am tempted to get their acoustipak for it....yeah I know, it is supposedly already quiet, but I don't want to hear the bloody thing. Anyways, anyone have any thoughts on Acoustipak products...they worth the shell out? I have read all the reviews and they sound good, but what to the good ol' ATer's have to say?

Cheers!

From one review I found:

- Cons
Price
Potential airflow interruption and rising of in-case temperatures if handled incorrectly

The review notes that the price of the kit was $85. My guess is that there are other chemically and structurally similar foam-pad products "out there" that cost less, and if identical in composition, only require some DIY adhesive solution and cutting.

I've personally tried Akasa PaxMate and Spire's Noisedeadener pads -- they are almost identical except that Akasa is softer and "cushy-er."

At a price of $9 to $12 (Spire vs Akasa) for those kits, it was worth it. It didn't make "all the noise" go away, but it turned "NOISE" into (noise). It helps.

There has always been the issue of obstructing airflow with material such as that like Acoustipak's. And this is the trade-off between quiet and cooling: you need air-flow for cooling, but air-flow is the bearer of noise.

Other than that, the only problem I have with any of this stuff is the marvelously effective adhesive that coats one side of it. You need a razor-knife or putty-knife if you ever have a need to remove it.

These are what I call "nickel-and-dime" solutions to noise (although the Acoustipak kit is not nickels and dimes). They extend your choices of potentially noise-making devices such as fans, where some fan might be a bit noisier but also more effective for your purposes. If you can "kill" some of that noise, you have a wider range of choice.

hmmmm...thanks for the notes Bonzai. I read a few reviews and Acoustipak was definitely scoring well. I don't have a heat problem, idle my 2 Xeons run at around 30C on passive cooling, which is ncie. But the 2 120's are just a little too loud for me, so I was going to throw some heatpipes on the video card, and some acoustipak and see where I end up....but I haven't met anyone that has used it!! 😛
