Beginning part of article:

"The American Civil Liberties Union will counter with a legal challenge if Gov. Mark Warner signs into law legislation that would prohibit methadone clinics from operating within a half-mile of a school or day-care center."

See link for rest of article...

ACLU threatens action if methadone bill signed

What do you guys think?

It's good that at least someone, somewhere, fights for people's rights, no matter what the majority thinks. The best defense is a strong offense and this applies to civil liberties as well. The ACLU takes a lot of flak because it often appears on the side of criminals and the undesireables, but by keeping the battleline of liberty at that point, sometimes past the very limits of prudance, the majority of Americans can live that much freer.

Sounds like the federal courts have already dealt with this issue before.

I wonder why the Gov. wants to test the waters again.

What is this stuff you speak of? Scummy, undesireable people? I bet alot of children see bums on their way too and from school.

Yeah, I agree. But a clinic next door to a school will increase the amount of what the kids see. Instead of just passing by, as you say, on their way to school, they can see it right from the playground.

Since you insist on taking such a stark, black & white view of the world, NO, it is not healthy. We should immediately impose martial law and shoot all recovering drug addicts on sight. We should throw all the ACLU supporters in gulags. We should repeal the Bill of Rights and turn America into a fascist police state so that no child would ever, under any circumstances, encounter anything even slightly inappropriate ... except, of course, for parents and siblings who disappear in the middle of the night for thinking unhealthy thoughts. Big Brother is watching US.

Happy? Does this totalitarian utopia trip your trigger?

Why the hell do you always want to demonize every tiny thing I say? 99% of the stuff you say is nothing as well. It depends who?s looking at it.

Because all you do is post banal rhetoric and illogical rants.

I agree with the governor in principle.. BUT it is almost impossible to facilitate his wish. 1/2 mile = how many blocks? radius?

C'mon conjur... I have my opinion on things as do you. You don?t like mine that is fine. You don't have to say how foolish I am for my personal beliefs. I never once attacked you and stated how much of an idiot you must be for having your beliefs. I just feel that methadone clinics would increase the amount of addicts around the schools, that?s all.

And "addicts hanging around schools"... I had a couple of question marks around that. It was just a question

Never let just one of us in here get to you... The Politics forum is not a very friendly place and is filled with people who substitute opinion for logic.

No that's true. Ann Coulter is not a liked person for many reasons; one of which is for her personal attacks on people. You shouldn't attack someone personally because they don?t agree with you. There should be a set of morals which some on the left, and some right I suppose, lack.

Is there such a thing as an open air methadone clinic? ALso according to the article it isn't neccessarily right next door! It could be right next door or any place within 1/2 mile(2640 feet) of any school or day care center, the tape measure would start a new every time a school or day care center is encountered. It would be interesting to see how the law maaker who drafted this law explains how it could be enforced in a large city!

A half a mile is pretty far away. Even drug dealers dont have to be more than 1001 feet away from the school.
The trick of this law in a city like miami is there is no place in the city that is further than 1000 feet from a school.
Half a mile away well they might as well put it out in the everglades. How will the junkies get to it?

No, it's an accusation and you know it!

It's inflammatory, completely inaccurate, and baseless.
