So I have a conundrum. I have a good system (see below) that has died on me for the second time. I had the Tyan Tiger MP ATX meltdown, sent it to Tyan, and they appeared to have fixed it. Now it has died again on me.. and I'm getting very tired of fixing it, see the following: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1334698

So I'm debating whether to fix it, or just upgrade the cpu/mb/ram to a single processor Intel or Opteron - I just want something that will be stable and has been around for a while to bugs have been worked out. My mistake was to by the first Tyan board for the dual MPs - wrought with problems. But, my conundrum is, will a single p4 3ghz or Opteron 142 be faster than my dual Athlon 1600mp?

I am building a PC for high-end 3d rendering and compositing freelance work.

If you're wondering why I don't want to get another dual board... I'm finding that the performance increase given by a dual is not worth the price. It's definetly faster with SMP enabled apps - but not twice as fast, and it is a little snappier with every app - (ie. when I'm rendering, my email client will load up instantly, instead of waiting 30 seconds). And the noise is insufferable from two cpu fans. With a quiet machine I can get more work done, because I can leave it on at night and sleep. With a loud machine, I have turn it off at night. So I'm thinking wuith a single cpu machine, I can put one of those Zalamn coolers on them.

Thanks very much for reading... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My busted box:
Full Tower case
520 watt Vantec dual stealth power supply
Dual AMD Athlon MP 1600+ w/ bundled fans
Tyan Tiger MP S2460
Windows 2000 sp3
1 gig ECC registered ram
80 gig maxtor IDE, 120 gig WD 8 mg cache IDE
MSI FX5600 Nvidia card 128 DDR
SB Audigy
3COM 10/100 card

Rather than giving up my duallie setup, I would first investigate a quieter cooling solution, possibly watercooling.
