Well, my POS 95 Nissan Altima GLE has yet another problem. My ac doesn't work anymore! Last week it worked fine and then, I didn't have any cold air. Then, when I hit the gas it was kind of cold. But when I was at a stop light, it was warm again. I thought my car needed more freon (sp?). It wasn't that. Plus the pressure was normal. Now I don't have any cold air and my compressor makes funny noises at me! :Q And my Dad took a reading of the pressure and it was 150 PSI! :Q :Q PLEASE TELL MY COMPRESSOR ISN'T BROKEN. :( My Dad says that's about 1k to fix. :( Maybe its my high or low pressure switch? TIA.

Unforunately without me being there, I cannot reliably diagnose your AC problem.
$1000 to repair AC ?

Your dad needs a few more drinks ;)

Being that you have a '95 altima, you don't have freeon(sp?) used to cool the air, but some other coolant. You might need to get that refilled, because those things thend to leak sometimes, or you may have a hole in your AC system that is leaking..

Well, why don't you move down here to central Florida. Then, I think you would change your mind.

And cjhaps, are you sure about that? I thought I had freon.

Hmm. I would venture to guess that either your a/c compressor clutch is acting funny or there's something wrong with the electrical system.

Some info: Any modern a/c system has a preset temperature point where the a/c clutch will disengage to prevent further cooling. This is because it is possible to vapor lock the evaporator (or is it condenser?) under the dash. This would cause the system to blow. When the system reaches a certain temperature the clutch will kick back in to start the process over again.

The a/c clutch is electromagnetic. By the sound of things it looks like something is wrong with that. That 1k you dad is saying is utter bs. A dealer a/c compressor on a volvo is $400 installed. Hope this helps.

that would be R-134a.

Is your radiator blocked? Is the electric auxilary fan turning on with the AC? ( it sould always run when the AC is on ) If not, the fan cound be bad, but most likely it is the controler or relay.

If your pressure is good, than that is probably what it is. What is your low side pressure? If it is higher than normal, then your condencer is not up to snuff.

Yeah... freon isn't the same as HFC-134a. Less damaging to the ozone. And those systems do tend to leak. The dealer or whereever can test for leaks by adding a coloring agent. The compressor... well you could always just go buy a book and have a nice little project on your hands :) I had no idea about my car until i started taking apart the intake manifold, brake system, etc and did the work myself. I enjoy it. Well it also helps that we have all the tools needed in our garage.

But you shouldn't be paying $1000 for AC.
