2. The kinds of patterns that regular expressions can match are equivalent to the kinds of patterns that a certain mathematical machine can also match. What kind of machine is that?

And ideas? google didn't turn up anything useful.
 
OK as I said, I lent the textbook to my friend, otherwise I wouldn't be asking in the first place. He hasn't said anything about this in class (Principles of Programming Languages). Thanks for the tips.
