The local McDonald's is giving something out to people who show up, meet Grimace, and can tell 'em what he is. I don't think I ever DID know what he was supposed to be. Is he even a "he"???? Hmmm...dunno how one determines gender in purple blobs. Anyway, helllllllllllllp. It'd impress the heck out of the kids if I actually knew this. :p

LOL doesn't that just figure? Thanks for trying. Funny the dumb questions that come up and bug you until you find the answer. I once spent four hours calling around the country trying to find out what year those paper seat covers showed up in public bathrooms!

The Grimace looked like a big prune. I don't think he was supposed to be anything. He was not an animal or anything. Just like the Fry Guys.

Who can name all the McDonalds characters? I remember:

Ronald
The Grimace
Fry Guys
Hamburgular
Mayor McCheese

There was some dumb bird too, I can't remember it's the name.

Dwell, the dumb bird's name is....birdie. Hehehe.

Well hmmmmm. It'd be a sucky contest if they only give a prize if you know what he is, but he isn't anything!

ROFL Namuna. I refuse to give up now, though. Although that's a great answer!!!

Thanks for that link, yakko. Pretty funny. :) Actually the search for Grimace's true identity has been really amusing, even if I'm no closer to the answer...grrrr.

Here you are boys:

- Ronald McDonald, a clown who frequents McDonald's apparantly quite often, and loves kids. McDonald's also has characters associated with its various products.

- Mayor McCheese, the Mayor of McDonaldland, has a head shaped like a cheeseburger.

- Big Mac, a policeman character, has a head shaped like a Big Mac sandwich.

- Grimace, a purple, endearing blob character, loves McDonald's milkshakes. According to the "Straight Dope" syndicated column, who quote McDonalds spokeswoman Jane Hulbert, Grimace is a "big fuzzy purple fellow...[who] personifies the child in everyone...He is Ronald's special pal. Everyone loves Grimace because of his innocent loving nature. He occasionally causes trouble in McDonaldland because he is clumsy, but his friends overlook this because he is so happy." Grimace is not related to Barney! Grimace was originally called the Evil Grimace. He had a penchant for stealing milkshakes from small children, was fuzzier and had six arms. Consider the definition of grimace: "A sharp contortion of the face expressive of pain, contempt, or disgust". (from The American Heritage Dictionary).

- Uncle O'Grimacey was introduced in the 1970's. He is Grimace's Irish uncle, although Grimace's heritage has never been fully explored. He was used to pitch the delicious Shamrock Shake.

- The Professor is a mad-scientist type character in a lab coat. He was introduced in 1971.

- Fry Guys, little mophead-like things, were originally called Goblins, but an ad campaign in the '70's changed that. They love McDonald's fries, as do their counterparts, Fry Gals.

- Captain Crook is the hero of the Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

- Birdie the Early Bird was introduced when breakfast began being served at McDonald's.

- Hamburglar is the villian who steals hamburgers from McDonald's (but, can you blame him?).

- CosMc is an alien character.

- Mac Tonight, a character who had a head shaped like the moon and a theme song to the tune of "Mack the Knife".

- "Speedee", the first McDonald's character, was used in the 1950's. He was a hamburger-shaped character with a perpetual wink and a sign saying "15 cents", the cost of the original burgers. Speedee was seen on the wrappers for the Daily Double sandwich used a couple years ago.

- Iam Hungry, so-called "VP of Snacking", has recently hit the scene. A computer-animated fuzzy beast, he looks a lot like "Animal" from the Muppet Show. Lacking the creativity of a Mayor McCheese or the cult following of Grimace, this guy will likely end up like CosMc -- gone.

Pay close attention to that in the BOLD type. Found this on the internet. Enjoy!!

An extra tidbit to the one I posted above:

Grimace wasn't always the kind and gentle creature that he is today. Originally a six-armed creature known as "The Evil Grimace", today's friendly purple fellow would run around stealing children's shakes. To my knowledge there was never even a "transition" episode where he lost those extra four arms, so it looks like McDonald's is trying to pull a fast one on us.

Thank you, WoodchuckCharlie! Wow, there's some characters I'd totally forgotten about. Hey, anyone besides me remember a character like a circus strong man in a striped shirt and black pants that used to chase Ronald around wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back late 60s or early 70s???? Or did I hallucinate him?

I'm going to print the whole darn thread - maybe I'll get something for the effort. :)

Btw, McDonald's got sued by the H.R. Pufnstuf creators for the resemblances being so close. Heh.

LOL ratboy. Okay, okay, I'm a little obsessive and COULD be doing something more productive. :p At least this hasn't involved long distance phone calls like the paper seat cover for toilets search did...whew! (So far, anyway. ;) )

Go WoodchuckCharlie!!! I forgot about half of those characters!!!

Hey, anyone remember Burgers King's answer to Ronald McDonald, "The Burger King"????

BK also had a cast of characters. Anyone remember any of them?

Whoa, I remember the Burger King, whatever happened to him. I wonder if he was overthrown..... ;)

unxpurg8d: I hope you get something really good for your efforts. I can just picture you down there pushing all the poor little kiddies out of the way yelling "I wanna talk to Grimace!" :p And isn't the guy in the striped shirt and black pants Hamburgler?

GF, it's the quest. :p And I deserve toys more than little obnoxious kids 'cause I'm nicer. So there. Well, bigger and older anyway. :D Naw, this was pre-Hamburglar. He was a real guy, not a character, and had muscles. Late 60s I think. Their first character wasn't Ronald, btw, it was Speedie.

Burger King had Sir Shake-a-lot, the King, and the Burger Thing that I remember.

unxpurg8d: Well you go get them girl! And make sure you take the bigger ones down first, then the smaller ones will all crumble and run away. And if their crying gets too loud, just stick your fingers in your ears and yell nana booboo, it works wonders with my children.... :p
