Acetone in Fuels

Driving 120 miles a day in a car that gets 24MPG I am very willing to give this a try... Going to start with getting a base line MPG and then start adding just like the article suggests. If it works it will be well worth the time spent.

- You will not get good mileage by putting acetone in bad gas. <---OK, nice disclaimer
- Warm air improve MPG <---oh really, explain Intercoolers
- It is well known that a lean mixture COOLS combustion chamber temperatures <----Er, I think you'll find a rich mixture does that, AFAIK. Lean = HOT.

Didnt do much of anything for me, but didnt hurt either. From what I've heard its useless in ethanolated gasoline. Although I havent even gone through a full tank for what thats worth.

My guess is that itd be more useful in a dirty engine, or if something is making you run rich.

Supposedly it works by breaking the surface tension of the gasoline...in other words, the molecules stick together less, and they can be more completely combusted. Which I dont doubt considering how polar acetone is. But ethanol is polar too, and that doesnt exactly make gas mileage any better. I suppose that has more to do with the fact that ethanol isnt as energetic as most gasoline hydrocarbons in the first place.

My guess is that itll help most people out by cleaning their engines out. If youre using ethanolated gasoline, its almost likely a waste for sure.

On non-ethanolated, it could make more sense. If theres nothing else already in there polar enough (is there? not sure) to split everything up, I can see it helping. And Im not even positive that a fully maintained and efficient engine isnt burning pretty much everything up unless theres already a problem with it to begin with.

Sorry, wrong. Warm air = less dense air = less fuel needed for a proper air/fuel ratio. Cool air = dense air = more fuel needed for a proper air/fuel ratio.

Intercoolers help a car produce more hp, not save fuel.

I know about the density and fuel ratio, but I was expecting more power = more motion, less requirement for fuel. A 500cc motor trying to propel a large car would not be efficient, but it would use less fuel per cycle, however not have less MPG than a better suited capacity.

I was thinking along those lines, but I'll await the usual 'your a dumbass' OT response.

I bought a can of acetone yesterday. My 91 Lesabre gets 25MPG pretty consistently. I drive 45 miles one way to school, and 101 miles one way to work. Next fill up I'm gonna try it.

Nice part is the car is worth $500 tops, so if I trash it, I'll just start driving my other car more

nice point BD2003 on ethanol. From the mileage readings I've recorded in my car and van, ethanol costs more to run than regular. I figured the difference in price between regular and E10 would have to be at least $0.12 to break even on the MPG decrease I saw. Plus all the ethanol plants around here are consuming a sh!tload of the natural gas and thus the price of that (which we count on to heat our house) is predicted to be 100-200% more this year than last years high prices.

fvck ethanol...until they tune cars to get better mileage on it (turbo charging, ect utilizing the higher octane rating)
