Acer V15 Nitro or Lenovo Y50

Both are similar specs, Acer is $10 cheaper than the lenovo that I'd buy with my company discount.

Does anyone know if the Acer will have issues with a Linux only OS..from researching the lenovo does run Linux well. Found nothing on the Acer.
 
I have a friend who bought an earlier version of the current Y50, and many people on the net seem to have the same sentiments about them...and that is Lenovo quality is sub par right now. It sounds strange suggesting an Acer product may actually be better, but its definitely worth investigating the build quality between them.
 
Now they have the IPS model of the y50. Saw one in store, very nice screen at 1080p.

I looked at some more things about the Acer and a German take apart video showed how flimsy it can be taking the Acer apart..its very fragile more so than the lenovo.

Right now I want to go with the lenovo but I don't get what the difference on price is on lenovo's website.

Besides the core i7 4710 vs 4720, all other components seem the same. The other difference is ac wireless 2x2 vs Intel dual band wireless 3160.

Is that worth the 50 dollars more ? For .1 GHz higher CPU and the Intel wireless?
 
The 4710 and 4720 are just minor speed refreshes of the same 4700 CPU. Shouldn't be any cost difference for the newer refresh (perhaps a discount for the "older" refresh). In this case the Intel wireless may be worse, its a 1:1 wireless unit...even a lesser brand 2:2 is probably going to have a better more stable connection. Though it does also depend on the design/routing of the antenna as well.

If you've played with the Lenovo in person and think it has better build quality, then that is probably exactly where the extra cost goes...into building a stronger laptop.

I cant vouch for one or the other. If the specs are similar my objective was to add build quality to your decision...which looks like you have already investigated.

Something else to consider if you have more time, that is the possibility of newer CPUs from the Broadwell family (i7-5700 MQ?).

Well it boggles my mind that the base model on the site is $899 and they charge more for the 3160 wireless card in the the next model up. The base model has a 4710hq and ac wireless 2x2.

The $949 model has the Intel 3160 card and the 4720hq CPU.

I plan on buying a 512gb ssd and another 8gb of ram. Debating weather to go with the $949 model or the base model.

Both now use IPS panels.

Well...so far I don't see it being worth extra money for the "upgrade"

There are other versions, and slightly lower prices for similar specs...but I dunno what if any discounts you have directly with Lenovo.

Through my company's affinity program the $899 model is $859. Yesterday the base model had fhd as the display, anti glare while today they all have IPS.

I'm just hoping whatever 2x2 card they put in there plays well with Linux.
 
Not that hard to swap a wireless card though, is it? I guess it depends on the model but most laptops have allowed at least that, HDD, and RAM changes.

Like I mentioned, they have a $1,099 model w/ the 4720, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and the Intel wireless. A 512GB SSD alone is about $200 to add yourself isn't it? Based on specs alone that model seems like the best bang/buck for your proposed final build.
 
Yea I need to see what the discount price is on that $1099 model. I don't need the extra GB of ram or ssd right now.

I figured I could use the stock 1tb sshd for dual boot windows and Linux until I can find a deal on a 512 or 1tb ssd.

The system isn't hard to upgrade unlike the Acer, and I figure the 2x2 AC card would be useful if I ever get a dual band router later.
 
Well dual band is different than multi-stream...

Dual band means the product can support different frequencies of WiFi, typically 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz.
Usually they say "simultaneous" if the product can use both frequencies at the same time.

Which is different than how many input/output streams it can support.
Like the 2x2 in this case means two up and two down streams, there are several reasons and benefits for it.

I need to chat with lenovo today before ordering. Their tech specs section states the fhd anti glare screen but under the models section it states IPS.

Definitely want IPS and I've heard in the past they white listed WiFi cards so you could switch it out but the PC wouldn't boot. I wonder if that is still the case.

I've been keeping tabs on their site and the prices and it's so odd how they change every Wednesday night. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
 
I went ahead and ordered the Y50 base model with IPS screen. It was ordered on 3/25 and the status has not changed.

I've heard of these laptops getting delayed. If that is the case I may just cancel it.

Brother ordered a refurb i7 4720 16gb 4gb 860gtx for like 75x.xx tax/shipped.

16% back from lenovo @ ebtes currently so it ended up being like 650ish
 
I received the laptop on 4/22 but I ended up sending it back because I didn't think I got one with the LED screen. The box said FHD. I know they did have a sale recently on the one your brother ordered for a starting price of $879 with the lenovo Barnes and noble gold account. I've just had car maintenance expenses lately so I haven't gotten a chance to order another.

When I do order one, that will most likely be the one I get as well. I'm surprised he only paid that much. Did it take a month or more for him to receive it?
