I can't find much about Acer notebooks using the search, but I am looking for a notebook for my wife to use at law school and I came across this one at NewEgg:

It seems like a pretty good deal looking at the specs, but I don't know much about Acer laptops.

Are they worth a crap?

Any other suggestions in that price range (probably anywhere up to about 1500 actually) would be appreciated.
 
Nice price, nice laptop but will not be a good gaming machine with the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset. Also Newegg return policy on laptops is "NON-REFUNDABLE ITEM. Warranty is provided through product Manufacturer Only!".
 
Yeah, I'm not really worried about the graphics on it, as my wife will only use it for MS apps. Any gaming will be Yahoo-based 🙂. Mainly I am concerned about weight, battery life, and price. I am also considering the Toshiba Tecra M2 S530. Basically the same specs, but the screen is smaller, the battery life is a little less, it's lighter, and it has a better graphics chipset.

Does Acer have a bad reputation on warranties? I really don't mind manufacturer's warranties.
 
I'm sure Acer warranties are as good as any other major manufacturer, my only concern would be if there is a problem with it right out of the box would Newegg offer a replacement. if your looking for battery life buy only a Pentium M equipped machine,
 
Definitely what I will do.

I have read some about IBM having student discounts. Do you know how they work? I assume you have to buy directly from IBM? I would definitely get her a ThinkPad if I could get it discounted.
 
Not sure, maybe do a google search for the IBM discounts, i have a 3 year old P3 thinkpad that works and looks like new still. They are most likely one of the best built laptops in the business.
