Acer monitor quality?

was thinking of getting this monitor from Acer. I've been on a 17" Samsung LCD that has been great, but I can't get 1080 on it obviously, and I've wanted to upgrade for a while. I need to know how good their quality is though. I had an acer CRT back in the day that worked very well, but that was a decade ago.

Also: Thoughts on Viewsonic? They had some other competitive monitors too...

Nah...that Asus is pretty nice...1080p, nice contrast levels...I mean, just read the reviews, for $200 is pretty damn nice! Buy it and enjoy it!

viewsonic not so good. acer mildly better, asus even better. That being said I have an h234h and is ok. Some ghosting despite the 2ms claim. I tried the asus and found it to have way to much backlight bleeding. The acer is overly bright for my tastes and it's black is not great in darker rooms.
Check out some of the dell monitor that are recommended.

Yeh, Id stay away from the ACER. One of the things Ive noticed is the lack of flexibility options via the OSD Menu in the lower end ACERs, but they do seem to use panels from big name manufacturers.

Also, it is best to be able to see a panel before you decide to buy it. Also an opportunity to easily & return it (because of pixel, tint irregularities, scaling/compatibility issues, etc.).

As for Viewsonic, FRYs has a new 23" IPS on display for $314. It is the VP2365wb (also available from newegg for $299). I think that Id much rather take my chances with it.

I should also say that one of the uses for it will be watching movies in a dark room.

The problem with a monitor is that it is involves such an important & large aspect of the computer experience. If you want to watch video media then you may be looking at a common 4:3 presentation as well as 16:9. When it comes to movies, ratios are not really that standardized & you will want to probably have your player application often manage the display ratio/presentation (eg, PDvD Aspect).

But any LCD is typically hooked to a computer & computers involve graphics display (eg, photo & web work) as well as text/graphic for office type work, special projects (such as multimedia), games, etc. One never knows (or at least I dont know) what they'll eventually get involved with.

Anyway, shop carefully as the monitor is such a very important part of the system & has a major impact on the computing experience. And after taxes shipping & any disposal fees even an inexpensive $200 monitor begins approaching now a $250+ investment. So adding a little more money & getting something like an IPS NEC EA231wm could well be money better spent. (Sorry, but this one doesnt have HDMI.)

I'm not a fan of Acer LCDs, I've been using an AL1916W and unless I have the brightness above 97 of 100 it flickers. I'm in the market for a new one soon, probably some on sale LG/Asus.

so what would AT go for? Here's my criteria:

I want a resolution of 1920x1080.
I will use it to watch tv, movies, and bluerays. Most of which will take place in the dark.
I will use it for gaming.
23" is the biggest I'd go

Although purchasers seem to like it (and that's important), the advertised viewing angle is bottom end. Be sure that you can live with that (along with tilt only).

160 degrees is bottom end? Hmm...I never realized that. The monitor I'm on now is the same and I've had no issue with it. Although I didn't notice the tilt only til you pointed that out

MOST LCDs under 400 dollars will be a piece of shit..

That's a fact.

There is NO point in comparing rotten apples to More rotten apples.

Do yourself a favor and go for a $380-500 24" S-ips/H-ips/"w/e"-ips (but NOT E-ips)

IT will be the best investment towards your computing experience.

Do not worry about response time / input lag / ghosting UNLESS the reviews say those issues are "severe" like the dell 2408wfp..

If you have the cash get a 3007wfphc or a 3008 if you need the inputs.

3008 does have a little more input lag because of the scalar chip. So if you don't need hdmi/component, then 3007 is a same spec panel without the scalar chip, less lag, and cheaper.

I definitely will look into those ones when I have more money, but it's going to be a couple years before I can afford to drop that kind of money on an LCD

Do not delay the monitor as something in "a few years."

You're better off saving your money UNTIL you can buy the "good monitor"

NEVER buy every piece of shit upgrade on the way to what you really wanted to begin with.

FROM now until you buy the monitor, that is TIME gone. THAT time could've been spent looking at Fantastic Images.

You can upgrade everything about your computer, but if thats all displayed on a Crummy display "tn", NONE of your investment was worth it.

It's like being a butter-face. You have a great body that can do the work, but you don't have the "FACE" to get the message across. :\

This is not the perfect comparison, but a great monitor does not depreciate much in value, and serves well for up to 5 years, while the base tower is outdated within 1.5-2 years.

I think I'm going with this monitor; ASUS VH236H. On sale for 179.99

I bought one of those last month. The out of the box settings were quite over-saturated, but that's what sells monitors in the store because of the 'rich' colors. Turned down the saturation a bit and it looks great. Better than my other TN panels, not quite as nice as my buddy's IPS monitor but well worth the savings.

It's also one of the only panels around this price range with a 2ms response time instead of 5ms.

Most of the monitors in this price range are pretty crappy, so I would go for a 24" Asus or Acer off of Tigerdirect for around $160 shipped after BCB (no tax, no recycle fee) and go off of reviews to make sure they are somewhat decent.

I have an Asus VH242H and it is decent enough for the price. Blacks are much better than my old 19" Samsung. I got it for $145 shipped from Tigerdirect after rebate/after bing/after paypal discount.
