Hi guys I found this laptop while going through my search, and it has everything I want in it :)!

Acer Travelmate 8000

However, I am unsure of Acer's reputation for quality in their products and it only comes with a 1 year warranty. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they know about Acer and quality, thanks!

A friend of mine has it... dont remember the model #

The built quality is good... possibly better than a dell...

The machine felt good to use. I didnt like the screen much though..

Features wise, Acer is very good for the $. I just recently bought one of the employees in our company a TravelMate 371T, specs are roughly:

Centrino 1.4M
256MB RAM
40 GB Hard drive
12.1" screen
external 1394 DVD/CDRW

Laptop quality seems decent, and it also only came with a 1 yr warranty. We've had several other Acer laptops dating back at least 5 years with the 310T and 320T... we needed to replace the hard drive on one of those and the plastic case leaves a little to be desired, but to this day they are still chugging along :)

I have the Acer Aspire 2001 centrino model with 15.4 wide screen and im very happy with it.
Build quality look excellent and feels very soild. Also was one of the cheeper wide screen models that I
looked at with the most featuresl.
Their service in Australia is apparently very good. For the first year under warranty they will fix my lappy in 2 hours or give me another now thats good service.

my girlfriend has been using a travelmate for years, it has held up quite good considering the abuse she has put it thru (dropping it, spilling milk on the keyboard, etc etc)

one of my first desktops was an acer. a pentum 100 I think :( and it cost about $1000. I gave it to friends for their 4 yo kid and it's running well. Not a single hiccup or hardware issue in all these years. I know you're talking about laptops, but I would try them again. I saw one in Sams Club a few days ago. It was a new model for them. They didn't have a pricetag on it yet. If you have a Sams close by, check it out. There's a free Sams pass floating around. There was one in this week's Walmart flyer on the back cover. Good thru april.

Got one, the Travelmate 800. Like the screen (nobody else had a centrino 1400X1050 15") and everything. It's comparatively flat and during normal typing or PPT and whatever the fan is never on.

I hate them. I work on them and I hardly see any of them in for service. That is how I get paid you know, by servicing computers. Seriously, what I said is pretty much true about them not coming in very often. The build quality from the early PIII era and earlier leaved something to be desired, but the latest ones are holding up very well.

I worked in Acer till last year and have to admit they are good. Of course it always depends on the models. There are of course certains laptoops that are better than others, quality speaking.

Get info on the warranty issue as well. In case you have problems (even ie if you're abroad), it is important to know how it works before buying it.

i also have an aspire 2000, and its built real solid, looks great, and extremely quiet. battery life is great too.

my cdrom didnt work when i first got it, so i sent it in to acer and they got it back to me real quick, and its been working great ever since. so i give their tech support 2 thumbs up. i was able to get a live person on the phone, and shipping was all free.

I've had bad luck w/ their WinXP tablet PC based notebooks I forget the model (it was a Pentium M w/ external Optical and floppy drives) , but many users where I used to work (IT department for a large city school district) had issues w/ their notebooks, in general they seemed to have a lot of build quality and comatibility issues at least w/ this specific model and the school's cisco network. I would be kinda leary of them (this is from 40+ users I'd say about 10 of them had hardware issues right off the bat (or so I was told)) welp Hope this helps, I'd be careful and look into your specific model to see if it has any issues.

Basically the 8000 model is just an updated model of 800 with built in flash card readers and a few other features, but overall it remains the same. So you might want to check some reviews for Acer TravelMate 800 -- (I have one of these, of course, I am currently replacing the LCD Monitor for these to a UXGA <g> because I simply work on AutoCad and need it).

I love this Acer laptop, it is a lot better then the Compaq, HP and Dell Notebooks I've owned before.

How do you plan to get the UXGA LCD into the TM800?

I might have to fiddle around with the inverter and such, but I hope I'll be able to get it in.

I actually just purchased an 800lci off these here forums. I can say without a doubt, this book is built about twice as well as my Dell 8600. I have them side by side and the difference in how solid the feel of the Acer is versus the Dell's is almost a joke. I've owned a T20, a Toshiba Tecra 8000, the Dell 8600 and now the 800LCI and I must say the Acer loses next to nothing in terms of durability, keyboard etc to the T21. Needless to say the 8600 feels the flimsiest.

Screenwise, the 1400x1050 is great. I have a Samsung WSXGA+ and the images on this lcd are definitely a bit sharper although the viewing angles on the Dell is much better.

I dropped mine on the ground and I had no problems at all from about 4 feet up, hit the corner on the lid, and I've had no problems with it (except a few scratches).
