Acer Ferrari 3400

Hi, I'm looking for a new laptop before I head off to university in September. I am a casual gamer so I would like a machine that plays the newer games relatively well. I'm not very familiar with notebooks so I was wondering if the Acer Ferrari 3400 is a good buy. If not, what are some other alternatives in the same price range?

Also, I would like something that plays DVDs and has a nice LCD screen - 17 incher is a bonus!

Thanks in advance!

Please Note: I'm a big fan of the red finish on the laptop!

Yeah the ferrari's a good laptop for your needs. The Radeon 9700 128mb should play even the newest games just fine. Although I'm surprised they didn't include a faster A64 processor, it shouldn't affect performance that much. Although I'm an A64 fan (emachines M6805), it would be irresponsible of me not to suggest a P-M laptop like the Dell Inspiron 9200. For around the same price you could get a similarly configured 1.8ghz P-M system with a 17" WXGA+ screen and a Radeon 9700. Although the 9200 is only slightly heavier than the ferrari, I believe 17" is too large for acceptable portability.. and it doesn't have the funky red finish you like so much 🙂. If you want to wait a few more months the next gen mobile vid cards are coming out (Geforce 6800 and Radeon x800). Although these will initially have a price premium over their previous generation cousins, they might be worth thinking about if you really wanna play the newest games with all the eye candy.
