Acer Ferarri 4000

can't wait. I went ahead and picked up a used chembook 2056 a couple weeks ago so that I would have something and could wait till these new releases settled down for a long time before picking one up. Glad I did 😀 That thing looks sweet! The original ferrari's were pretty thin and light weight for the power, so i'm guessing this will be even more appealing in that regard. Put in a glossy wsxga and they'll go very fast.
 
I cannot believe Acer and other notebook OEM's/ODM's/manufacturers are getting behind Turion64 (and have been pushing the Mobile Athlon64) without producing/announcing 64-bit Windows drivers for any of the mobile GPU's incorporated into their notebooks. eMachines/Gateway, Uniwill, Arima, Acer, Fujitsu, etc. have all given their customers a big f*ck you by touting 64-bit support for these notebooks without providing 64-bit 3D drivers. I guess a lot of this can be blamed on nVIDIA and ATI as well since neither has coughed up 64-bit mobile drivers to date. I mean, yes, the 4000 is SWEET but a waste of money IMO if there's no 64-bit 3D support. WTF is the point of having a powerful 3D GPU coupled with a great 64-bit platform if you cannot take advantage of them? If anyone knows of 64-bit Mobility Radeon or Radeon Xpress 200M drivers, then I'll be one of the first to sign up for the Ferrari. Otherwise, I'll keep waiting.

Update: I recently asked ATI's customer support (via they're pitiful support site) if end users must rely on notebook manufacturers to produce Mobility Radeon drivers or if they (ATI) knew if Windows XP Pro x64 had built-in 3D and chipset drivers for the X700 and Xpress 200M, and here's their pathetic response:

"Product specifications can be found by going to www.ati.com, and selecting your
desired use under the PRODUCTS menu.

A list of all products related to the specific use selected will then be displayed.
Once you have selected the desired product from the list, a 'Quick Links',
option for ?Specifications? about that product will be available
for you to review the selected product?s Specifications.

Under this 'Quick Links' section you can also click on ?Product
Comparison? to aid in your evaluation.

Select up to three products by checking the box and click 'Next'."


Mobile products aren't even listed on that site, and if you actually navigate to the mobile products, they refer you to the notebook manufacturer. nVIDIA's site, as far as I can tell, doesn't even mention that you must obtain drivers from the manufacturer's site.
