Acer Extensa 4420 overheating???

Hi my friend has a Acer Extensa 4420 notebook and it keeps turning off randomly. We formatted the PC and installed XP and it just keeps going off randomly. I think it is overheating because it gets really hot then just turns off. So me and my friend put it in the garage(very cold) and it stayed on for hours so I think it is overheating but what would cause it to overheat? I am going to install HWmonitor to check the temps later but what temps are bad for a notebook?

Edit: I used the HWMonitor(by CPUID) and got 80C+ on the CPU and 88C+ on the system temp. What should do? It sounds like the fans or working, Im not blocking any air vents or anything so why is it so hot? I think if the fans werent working the CPU would blowup but idk.

-Thanks for the time and help

can you feel an air coming out of the exhaust?

its possible that theres a lot of dust causing problems with heat removal, or that a fan isnt working properly or at all. if it wont void the warranty, find the manual for it and open it up (unplugged, battery out) and then put AC power to it and turn it on, see if everything is working properly. and air can may be needed to clean it out well, so grab one at a wal mart or wherever.
