I just checked and you're right, they just stopped shipping, pick up in store only now.

Nice find. CC has a whole series of systems that get cheaper (or don't increase in price much) when you add a monitor/printer bundle. To get to them:

* Go to the desktop computers listing
* Click on the link "Desktop Package: Monitor & Printer - Save $XXX - Click Here" for any computer that has it
* You'll be taken to fairly cheap bundles, such as this, this, and this (the last couple come with 19" WS LCD's)

I am curious to know how reliable Acer Desktops have been for people. I've had mine, the Aspire 135 with a 3100 Semperon, for about 1 1/2 years. Although it is a basic machine, I have no complaints about performance. The downside is that I have had to replace the hard drive and the motherboard. However, I now think that the motherboard malfunction may have been causing random system crashes, which then caused the fragmented files on the hard drive. So I am lukewarm on them -- any other input?

I have some experience with two Acer desktops and one laptop, all bought by friends within the last few months. From what I've seen, the build quality on all of them was solid. The desktops especially had decent cases, with thumbscrews, good airflow and good cable management. For the price, the systems were hard to beat.

None have had issues so far, but it's been a short time, so I can't comment on their durability.

I got the $289.99 Acer Sempron deal last August for the kids after their HP died. Upgraded to a 17" LCD for $50, then sold the LCD for $120 as they already had a 19" CRT. It is on at least 12 hours a day between the three of them. The six year old had a sh!t fit and pounded the cheap Acer keyboard into the scrapheap, but the rest of the system is going strong for a $220 computer.

I added 1GB of RAM $68 and an eVGA 7600GS $79.99AR for a decent gamer. Recently swapped the Sempron for a Athlon64 3800+ X2 $83 which didn't seem to speed anything up at all. Well maybe when the kids start burning DVDs.

If you could still get the Acer with WinXP Home I would be all over this.

This was interesting: Many stores have the CPU part of the bundle, but fewer stores have the display. I ordered it for pick-up at two different stores! Here is the sad part: I thought I'll buy the Acer to play around with Vista, but realized that except for video, it has better specs than my Socket A rig. 😱

The bundle includes a 17" CRT monitor. That pretty much kills the deal if you need it shipped.

yeah, you know they are just going to be giving away CRT's for practically nothing to clear out their shelves.

Yes, but if you own a computer shop like I do then you can see the cheapest 17 inch crt on Newegg is 119.00 with 22.81 shipping. Many customers have no problem with a crt or use it as a second monitor. So I knock 50.00 off migrating their data and setting up the new machine they give me the monitor and I sell the monitor for 75.00. We all make out, including the person who buys the monitor.
So the computer buyer actually only pays 269 for the computer.

I run about 50 of the Aspire Semprons in our Charter School and have had zero failure rate for the entire school year. All parts are compatible with off the shelf components, though I would avoid their SFF systems for this same reason.

I wanna know your secret to selling CRT's. I had 2 nearly new 19" CRT's I couldnt sell for $20ea.

Really? Many people who blow a monitor know they can get a good deal on the monitor as part of the package on a new computer, so they just want something for a year or two tops until they upgrade. Especially with Vista causing many people to delay buying a new computer a 20.00 tube 19 inch is a steal. I would buy them from you in a hot minute.

I decided to pick up this combo today. Boy, did I have fun. This is the first time I purchased anything from CC since they had the big layoffs. When I arrived I went straight to the computer section to pick it up. Even though the store only had a handful of customers, it took me 10-15 minutes to get someone to help me. I showed him a printout of the webpage and said I wanted this combo. He started looking it up on the sales computer. It took him a little while but he finally found it. Unfortunately, The monitor showed up at $140 instead of $100. He tried to sell me the combo for the higer price. I told him I wanted the advertised sale price. He tried different options but was not able to get the combo sale price. He then told me the only way I can get the sale price was to go home and order it on their website for store pickup then come back and pick it up. I informed him that I tried that already and there is no add to cart button on the webpage. He looked all over the website trying to figure out how to checkout online (another 5-10 minutes). He finally said he would have to check with the manager. Took him 10-15 minutes as he wandered around the store looking for the manager. When he came back the price of the monitor mysteriously dropped to $100 in the sales computer. Everything was good to go after that. What should have taken 15-20 minutes total took almost an hour. Whew. Oh well. I've heard that some people have returned the monitor for full refund in previous deals like. Has anyone tried it yet?

Thanks to techs for posting this deal! Nobody around here seems to be aware of this online in store deal.

Sell them? My local computer charity group won't even take CRTs as donations anymore.

Expansion
Available 3.5" bays Info unavailable
Available 5.25" bays 1

PCI-express slots 0

Ok, I looked inside it. It DOES have a PCI-e 16x for video, one regular pci-e slot and two pci slots, one occupied by the modem

Sorry to be a pain but any idea on how many spare 3.5"/5.25" bays it has?

Edit: Also does the motherboard support stuff like an X2 5000+ . I can't find any info , found the manual for the AST180 on Acer's site but its totally non technical http://www.acerpanam.com/synap...=7&formid=3425#results
