Acer Chromebook and Chrubuntu

I've never owned a laptop before, and I've been toying with the idea of getting an Acer Chromebook (the 199 USD one!) upgrading the RAM, putting in an SSD, loading it up with Chrubuntu, and making myself a dandy little hybrid ChromeOS/Linux laptop.

Has anyone else done this before that could provide a road-map of risks/rewards, or just generally things to watch out for?

Seems like you'd be spending enough money on a larger SSD and RAM that you might as well just buy a 400-500 dollar real laptop.

That's certainly possible.

Part of the motivation would be the fun of doing the tweaks to it myself, and I suppose that that's probably not the best bang-for-buck scenario.
