Acer Aspire One

I went to BB today and they had it on display along with a sale price of $349 for the 120GB windows version. I have to say that this machine is pretty badass. It was able to boot up XP pretty fast with it's 1GB of ram and the system was very responsive. Although I am going to hold out for the new version with the dual core atom and 6-cell battery that comes this fall I must say Acer has definitely hit a home run with this machine.

i just saw on another site that you can get $100 with an $100 internet signup. seems like a nice deal for anyone wanting a cheap netbook

bought one for $349+tax without the internet signup. So far I am very pleased with the general performance. XP starts up at 1 minute 20 seconds even with all the craps they installed from factory.

Haven't tested the battery yet, and I don't know how well the built it is. One thing I already noticed is that the right mouse button is depressing unevenly, the keyboard is quite flimsy, the speaks sounded like crap and the glossy black plastic surrounding the LCD is fingerprint magnet. But all are functioning well and within expectation of this price point.

The hard drive it used in mine is a Seagate 120GB. I think is this one (seagate.com) Because there is a bulge at the bottom, it does make some part of the notebook about half inch thicker.

Thermally it is wonderful, well within my expectation and after 5 hours of heavily use on the bed it is still below the level of my P4 dell and core duo Macbook. The edge of the bottom are the vents which taper up so the they are not easily obstructed by the bed sheets or by your lap, a thoughtful design.

What I got for the price made it an easy choice.

I also picked one of these up and am very pleased with it.

On first boot it's going to install some stuff and take about 20 minutes + a reboot. After that I spent about an hour removing bloat - it would've gone faster I imagine if the processor were better.

I disagree on the quality of the speakers - they certainly aren't as nice as my Klipsch Pro Media set on my desktop, but as far as laptop speakers go, they're pretty nice. As the speakers are on the front/bottom of the laptop, if you were using it in bed, I can see how the audio would be poor. But on a flat hard surface, they're pretty tolerable. I'd go so far as to say they're better than the speakers on my Gateway T series, my Dell 600m, and probably on par with my ASUS G1Sn.

The problem in my case with the speakers is that the whole case will vibrate when it attempts to play some bass (it doesn't get deep at all, just an annoying rattle sound much like how a TV closet will vibrate to the TV). comparing to the dell it is a step down, but comparing to the Macbook it is MUCH louder, which is a plus.

Oh I tried to play game, it runs CS 1.6 and geometry wars, but would not run TF2 no matter what, crashes after map is loaded even with latest driver and lowest settings.

I'd like to find a list of games that work well on the Aspire - so far all I've bothered to test is WoW, which I can get at around 15fps (in my brief testing in the inn at Shattrath). When I walked through a transparent curtain though the framerate dropped real low, so I wouldn't say WoW is overly playable on it - maybe good for casual play and AH stuff.

Also: Anybody know where to get a better, more padded sleeve/case for it? I'd like to stick it in a canvas messenger bag I have, but I don't feel the sleeve that it comes with would offer much protection to the very light beating it will take in my bag.

This could help
