I have th 620U I got from officemax, I think the exact same scanner with different software... the drivers are the same. Good scanner, works good under Win2K -- and OfficeMax delivered my rebate in 25 days. Great deal.

I have the 620ST and haven't done much OCR work, but the few times I've tried it using the bundled software, it has worked fine. OCR accuracy likely depends on the software you use as well.

crap, i spent $100 on the 620U last winter :(

yeah I've used my 620 for OCR and it kicks ass, scanned a whole 300+ pg novel, I pumped the dpi to 400 and it still only took a few seconds to scan 2 pages (both sides).

I'm really happy with mine and would recommend it to anyone, the HP SCSI ones I've used at college suck.

oops, i mean last summer i got my 620U, and I used ABBYY FineReader 4.0 Standard to do that scanning and used 400dpi because it proved the best OCR quality

Hi, I went to a local OM and found out it's the 320U that's onsale for $29.99, the 640U is still at it's regular price of $79.99, but the $30 manufacturer's rebate still applies.

Not on their web site. But it is on the front page on their weekly ads. You can get it in your local OM store.

That scanner works great. I tried it last night. It comes with a OCR software, "FineReader" or something.

The USB one is better but I doubt the availability.

Hmm, I got my 640U at $59.99 yesterday.

I just called my local OM and they have a "Gateway Country." First off if I call OM they need to give me a different number to call "Gateway Country," they can't forward me. Then Gateway says they don't sell scanners seperate from computers. WTF? Anyone else have that prob?

At my local OM the scanners are in the regular OM store, 'not' in Gateway Country.

I bought the 620P the last time they had this deal and I'm happy with it.
I might not be quite as happy if it cost me $80.

Anyone have a link to a review or have some sample images. Is this thing any good? I already have a Visioneer Paperport 6000b parallel, but I really want USB for the speed increase. Parallel is slooow. I don't want to go down in quality though just to get USB

I think I just read in one of the biggie MAgs... that this scanner made one of the best quality images and was the cheapest model they tested (as it turned out).

What is the difference between the 640U and the 640BU!?? The BU version is $10 more.... and has an instant rebate ($30).

Yes, it is the 640U. It is regularly $79.99. This week it is $20 off bringing it to $59.99. There is a rebate form in their rebate flyer for $30, bringing it to $29.99. I just picked one up. The big difference that I saw with the BU besides the front panel controls is that it is true 42 bit, whereas the 640U is 36 bit. As a sidenote, OM has replaced the one mailing, one check rebate system with a flyer of individual rebate forms that you have to send to individual addresses. So we're at the mercy of the manufacturer's rebate fulfillment centers. So I'll be out .99 in stamps for my free blank cds, free ink pens, and $30 scanner. I can live with that. The scanner even comes with a USB cable so I don't have to feel guilty about getting one from Outpost again this week when I just ordered one for the Compgeeks USB hub last week.

I have the 320U, basically half the resolution of the 640, and in my opinion, this is an outstanding scanner. Very fast preview scan. Fast regular scanning. Good drivers.
