Acer 636a cd-rom won't read CDRs...

Ok, This cdrom drive will not read CDRs but will read cdroms in this computer:

Biostar M6TBA motherboard - BX chipset
250W power supply case
128mb RAM
Celeron 633/generic slotket - no overclock
Western Digital 30gig HD
TNT 16mb AGP

The HDD and the CDrom are on separate IDE channels, DMA on both.

The Acer 636a will read CDRs when installed (plug-n-play, no drivers) in my computer:

Asus P3V4X - VIA 694X....chipset
235W power supply case
384mb RAM
Celeron 900/Asus slotkey - straight overclock to 100mhz FSB
Western Digital 45gb HD
GeForce AGP

WD 45gigger as master, Acer cdrom as slave on primary IDE, DMA on both, ATA66 cable

Here's what I've tried.. I switched IDE cables (33/66), switched to slave, enabled/disabled DMA, upgraded the firmware on the Acer, and drank more than a couple beers (still didn't help).

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
