Acer 15.4", Turion 64, 1GB ram, dl DVD writer $499

Lower end Acers tend to suck in terms of build quality. Not as hot as it seems.

Some of the higher ends are teh uber sh!ts though.

<--------Posting from an ACER TM8204

I've not been a fan of Acer since they made such crappy systems back in the Pentium days. Having said that, I saw 2-3 of these laptops last week at a conference. I was impressed by their design and how good the displays looked. If you can snag one of these, that's not bad. It's about $100-180 cheaper than an Inspiron with the same configuration. (based on the processor, RAM, and DVD R)

i actually bought one of these today and i have to say i am not dissapointed....it has a few things it is missing like a it is only a single core and it doesnt have a svideo out.....but other than that i can get over many of the little things.......seems pretty solid compared to my old toshiba....and it has a gorgeous screen..big sata hd best buy said it was 100gig mine was 120gig...i played around in vista for about 20 min and then put linux on it lol....but i have to say the price was right and it came with $60 lexmark printer and i signed up for the rewards zone and i got a $10 gift card too....i would have to say that $760 worth of stuff with a $10 giftcard for $527 after tax pretty good deal...

Yeah...I am not an ACER fan either but at $499 with Vista Home Premium Edition it is a deal

That has an impressive spec list for a sub-$500 laptop.

Vista home premium
1GB memory
100(or 120)GB drive
media reader
dual layer dvd burner
wireless
2GHz processor speed
15.4" screen

actually the graphics on the acer are ATI Radeon 1100 yes its integrated but of the integrated graphics it is one of the better ones, comparible to the geforce 6150 graphics on alot of the laptops now, which is also integrated.

I may check this out (BestBuy will probably be sold out). My only concern is the low res on the screen.

I'd look else where if you wanted to run any version of vista.

Officemax has a nice system going for $700... with good ram, a good videocard, and a decent graphics card.

Wow, it has a good video card AND a decent graphics card? Amazing... Dual GPUs!

On a side note - that other system you mentioned is an everex, if anyone should be suspect for build quality, it would be a brand that is not well known, and, everex isn't well known.

Acer laptops have the best look in my opinion. To me, the laptop look is what it important just as much as the features. I like the Acer because it is a simple, basic layout. It looks nice. The only thing holding me back on this deal is the 15.4" screen. I am actualling looking for a 14" more compact laptop. Acer makes one, but I am not quite ready to bite, but almost did a few times.

The only thing I can comment about this is that the other day, when I was in BB checking this very laptop out, I decided to compare it to a dual core TL-50 model they had nearby. I basically gave it 4 tasks to perform, and did the same with the dual core laptop. O/S, ram & hard drive was the same on both machines, but while the dual core machine easily handled the tasks all at the same time, without pause, the MK-36 single core machine flat out FROZE! Now I realize that the comparison between a single core and a dual core processor is hardly fair at all, but the tasks I gave the machines are some that my old XP2800+ machine (that I'm using right now) could handle all at once, without a problem. Granted, my computer isn't running the memory hog that Vista is, but XP was considered a memory hog too, at one time, for those that remember. 🙂

That being said, if I did decide to buy that machine, I'd likely look into eventually upgrading the cpu to dual core, and adding another gigabyte of ram to it. And that would raise the price (eventually) to the price of a dual core notebook anyways.......so why not just buy one in the first place??
